On the other side, we have an explosion of modern technical disciplines where anyone with a laptop can call themselves whatever sounds coolest on LinkedIn.

The tension between these two worlds is not just about semantics. It is about accountability when things break.

Think about the bridge Marcus designed. If that bridge fails, investigators can trace the failure directly back to his calculations, his signature, his legal liability. The system is designed to find a neck for the collar.

Now think about a catastrophic algorithmic failure in a financial trading platform that wipes out billions of dollars in seconds, or a glitch in a medical device firmware update that delivers an incorrect dosage. Who signs the blame? Often, it is a nameless corporate entity, diffused across a global network of contractors, agile sprints, and decoupled microservices.

When everyone is an engineer, no one is.

And that devaluation hits the people who actually calculate the load-bearing walls the hardest. It diminishes the profound burden carried by those who design physical infrastructure, knowing that a decimal point misplaced by a millimeter means a collapsed roof.

At the same time, it alienates the brilliant software architects and systems designers who are building the invisible infrastructure of our daily lives without a legal framework to hold their work to the same ethical standard.

We are living through a massive renegotiation of what it means to build the future.

The old guard wants to lock the gates, pointing to their framed diplomas and state-issued stamps as the only proof of legitimacy. The new guard wants to break the walls down, pointing to shipping code and market disruption as the only metrics that matter.

Both are missing the quiet, human heartbeat underneath the conflict.
