The financial loss runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars annually. But numbers on a spreadsheet do not capture the quiet desperation of a small business owner watching his life savings wash ashore in a wave of brown slime.

The Invisible Stakes

Entrepreneurs are experimenting with turning the stubborn weed into fertilizer, building blocks, paper, and even biodegradable shoe soles. If sargassum can be transformed from a costly waste product into a valuable raw material, the economics of the cleanup might finally start to balance out.

The Horizon

Back on the beach in Tulum, the sun climbs higher, burning off the morning mist.
