Fathur Rahman, head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Agency, confirmed that fatalities and severe injuries span across multiple hard-hit regencies, including Sikka, West Manggarai, and East Manggarai. In the village of Reok within Manggarai, eight people tragically lost their lives after being caught in a sudden landslide triggered by the seismic shock. Rescuers are still actively digging through tonnes of mud looking for missing villagers.

Chaos in Hospitals and Public Spaces

Footage shared widely on local television and social media paints a harrowing picture of the initial minutes. Hospitals in the district of Ende were forced to rapidly evacuate patients, wheeling beds, IV stands, and oxygen cylinders outdoors to set up emergency triage stations in the open air.

The panic extended to local institutions. At the St Peter Major Seminary in Sikka, students and nuns scrambled for safety during morning Mass when a section of the assembly hall roof collapsed. The seminary's rector, the Reverend Guidelbertus Tanga, noted that one priest suffered a broken leg after jumping from a second-floor window to escape the failing structure.

In Talibura village, resident Nona recounted the terrifying experience to reporters. "The quake was massive, the shock was so strong, we were resting at home with family," she said. "There were 13 of us inside the house and we all ran to save ourselves."

Tsunami Alarms and Official Response

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an immediate tsunami warning following the initial tremor, urging residents along the northern and southern coasts of Flores to self-evacuate to higher ground or move more than two kilometers inland.

Landslides blocked the primary roadways for cars, forcing rescue units to attempt alternate routes by ferry. Around 2,000 residents in Nagekeo fled to temporary shelters after warehouses, government buildings, and homes sustained heavy structural damage.

The region hit today is historically volatile. In 1992, this exact part of Flores experienced a devastating magnitude 7.5 earthquake that caused catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure. Because shallow earthquakes like today's 10-kilometer deep tremor release massive amounts of energy near the surface, they routinely trigger secondary hazards like landslides, liquefaction, and structural failures in unreinforced masonry buildings.
